About
My research and passion relate to teaching students and teachers to think critically about media and use media/new technologies to create their own counter-narratives.
I worked for ten years as a freelance photojournalist documenting situations of poverty and social activism on three continents. In 1987 I won First Prize News Features/Series and the Oskar Barnack Award at World Press Photo.
I spent six years teaching bilingual primary school in the Los Angeles Unified School District. During this time I also earned my Master’s Degree from Vermont College, focusing on: Media Literacy for Transformative Education.
After spending several years as the Regional Coordinator for Training at the Center for Media Literacy, I earned my Ph.D. in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
I currently work as a Faculty Advisor for UCLA’s Teacher Education Program and continue my research and practice focusing on the teaching of critical media literacy in K-12 education.
